| Introduction | I spent the early years wandering through deserted backwoods with my dog. I prefer swamps and deserts to malls and condos. I'd rather listen to my own thoughts than the blather of contrived social chatter. Talk to me about something interesting -- hopefully not your cruise, your witty country club friends or your genius offspring. Every young person should learn to cook -- only a very few should study Chaucer. I'd rather visit my dentist than attend sporting events or weddings. Religion and politics are not taboo topics. A young person's reluctance to accept advice offered by those who came before is a Great Tragedy. Selecting the right marriage partner is the most important decision you will ever make. It is ironic that land developers call branch banks, strip malls and poodle clipping parlors "improved properties" and wild forests, foggy bogs and rolling meadows "unimproved properties." I didn't choose the Arts, but I can't escape. I am not "creative" -- I only do as I am told by my medium. Real "teachers" and real "artists" can be rightfully so designated only by others. Everyone will not understand what every part of this means. Nonetheless, all of it is true... |
