IntroductionPenny and I were 25 year old backpackers when we met at the bus station in Darwin, Australia on July 2, 1972. (July 1, Canada Day in Canada.) She was a qualified nurse and I an elementary school teacher, each with three years experience in our professions. We teamed up in Darwin for a 4,000 mile hitch hike to Uluru in Central Australia and the Great Barrier Reef on the Queensland coast. Depending on our compatibility during that ‘trial run’, we planned to team up for an overland adventure through South East Asia, India, Nepal and Africa. Fifty two years, 2 sons, 4 grandchildren and many thousands of miles later, obviously the compatibility worked out! This blog was initiated to document our return to backpacking in Australia, S.E.A. and Bhutan immediately after our retirement in 2012. I fired it up again in 2018 to document our travel to the UK for the Whitbread Round the World Race 40th anniversary crew reunion. In 2024 I published Volume 1 of my memoirs, ‘Lions, Whales and Other Tales’. In January 2025 I’ve opted to publish some of the travel-related chapters of the memoir here, for easier online sharing.
