| Introduction | I turned 65 in 2009. A Catholic-school inspired rule-follower, I spent my entire life doing "the right thing," hoping to insure a comfortable and worry-free retirement for myself. I worked at the same company for 25 years, put away as much as possible in my 401K, bought a home in an appreciating neighborhood and bought every kind of insurance known to mankind. Over the years I had amassed a substantial amount of equity in my home, and always felt that it represented a large and safe part of my retirement nest-egg. Well, you all know the rest. Everything came tumbling down around me. At the same time my savings and home equity began to self-destruct, the job I had landed for myself when it became clear I would run out of money before I run out of life -- well, it vaporized -- yet another casualty of the recession. On this blog I will document all the struggles, victories, setbacks, revelations, epiphanies, bright ideas, frustrations and hilarities brought on by this sorry state of economic affairs. |
