Favorite Books I would like to share my picks for the funniest writers available on the shelves at this time.Tom Robbins books have been a companion of mine for over thirty years. Like Stephen King his works will never translate well to the screen because it is in his beautiful, intricate wording where the laughs derive.Christopher Moore reminds me of Robbins in many ways, the world through his eyes is one we recognize, but is askew and filled with wonderful, eccentric characters. What can one say about David Sedaris that every literary critic hasn't already ? David keeps a little notebook in his pocket and records the often surreal things that happen to him on a daily basis. His books are comprised of these stories, tales about his upbringing and family, and have made tears of laughter roll down my cheeks more than any other writer.Mil Millington got his start with a webpage called "Things My Girlriend And I Have Argued About". To date he has written five novels, each funnier than the last. Do yourself a favor and pick up Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed by Lance Carbuncle, and his second novel, "Grundish And Askew". They are filled with outlandish characters, bizzare footnotes, and are simply hilarious. Stand up comic Jim Norton has written two books teeming with rants and sexual content reminiscent of the finest days of National Lampoon. Speaking of stand up comics, Doug Stanhope's book "Fun With Pedophiles" almost killed me. I was laughing so hard I thought I'd never catch my breath. Where are the female authors you may ask.To my mind the funniest woman out there is Chelsea Handler, hands down. She has published three books of her misadventures that are definitely worth a look see. These are the authors that I highly recommend, I will add others as I find them. If you have a suggestion for an author or book that will make me piss myself by all means let me know. e-mail me at jim@soberperspective.com
