| Introduction | Born in Brisbane, Queensland, and raised in one horse towns along the road to Cunnamulla, where my grandmother was born. I attended a high school in Brisbane where old fashioned racism was the order of the day. After a year at the University of Queensland, I escaped overseas. I returned to Australia in 1975 and began to come to grips with Australia. in the 35 years that followed, I worked in Aboriginal organisations (the Aboriginal Medical Service in Sydney, FCAATSI in Canberra, the Central Land Council in Alice Springs, the Cape York Land Council in north Queensland), studied at the Australian National University, Macquarie University, and also worked for the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody and the Queensland Government. Now an academic and writer, my research interests lie in political and legal anthropology, indigenous agreements with mining and energy companies, the status of indigenous women and children and indigenous art. I work at the University of Melbourne in the School of Population Health, Faculty of Medicine, Dental and Health Sciences. I am at the Centre for Health and Society. |
