| Introduction | My name is William Still. I was born a free slave in Burlington county, New york. I was the youngest child out of my sister and brother. When I was 23, I left the family farm in New Jersey for Philadelphia, for a better life and to help others. When I arrived in Philadelphia it was like home but I didn't have any money. But I had a mind like no other I taught myself how to read and write, that I was able to hold the position of secretary in the Pennsylvania Abolition Society. A all-white society with my views on how to aid fugitive slaves since, I had been one myself. I was such an asset to the group, that I was elected chairman in 1851. I held this job for the next ten years. I became chairman of the Vigilance Committee in 1852. As I gain power I said to myself I wanted to help my follow Afican American people. So I use my house that I had for a bus station for the Underground railroad. Now I was a (Activist)aganist these white people I work for. |
