| Introduction | I am recently retired after teaching art for 36 years. I note with sadness that many schools are cutting art and music programs to save money in rough financial times. We all know that kids with an opportunity to participate in music and the arts perform better academically; fight to keep your art programs! I encourage you to provide your students with as rich an art experience as possible - they should dip brushes into creamy paints, moisten their hands with slimy papier-mache goo, squeeze clay between their fingers, weave with brightly colored yarn, fold, twist, and cut paper, and draw - all the wonderful tactile experiences that are disappearing as kids spend their lives engaged in electronic media. Their favorite place will be the art room! |
