Introduction Mom had me stick geranium stems in the ground in front of my sisters' playhouse. I watered them as directed, but had no faith. Imagine my surprise (and delight) when they grew! I tried the same thing with hedera (ivy) sprigs that I liberated while delivering early-morning newspapers. Those too were successful (and invasive). My Dad removed them because the hold-fasts ate into his shed cedar siding. Mom and I planted a packet of radishes in an old cast iron laundry sink filled with subsoil. I learned about poor soil and slow drainage. A neighbor noticed my gardening interest─imagine a kid digging and pulling weeds without being told to. She gave me Calla lily divisions. For my birthday Mom presented me with gladiolus corms. I loved those flowers! I discovered manure tea by plopping rabbit beans (contributed by Cocoa our pet rabbit) into a gallon jug of water. After pouring this stinky elixir onto plants SUPER growth followed. That was 1957. My gardening fascination has never faded.
