IntroductionFor veteran blogs: Michael served in the Marines (68-70) including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam. He experienced combat in numerous patrols, search-and-destroy missions, and operations. He witnessed the events leading up to the shootings at Kent State University where he was a student. He participated in the peace movement until the War’s end in 1975, including the famed veterans’ march on Washington in 1971, when veterans, led by John Kerry, protested against the war they fought. In 2001, he published a memoir of his service, Fire in the Hole: A Mortarman in Vietnam (www.amazon.com/Fire-Hole-Mortarman-Michael-Orange/dp/0595160034/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213061993&sr=8-1) Since 1984, he has volunteered as a guest lecturer for history and social studies classes. Currently, he teaches classes about the War at the University of Minnesota, Compleat Scholar Program and other venues. He is a long-time active member of Vets for Peace.
InterestsFor other blogs: After a 31-year career as a city planner for the City of Minneapolis, I left and started my own consulting business with a focus on environmental work for local cities and counties (carbon baseline assessments, energy and sustainability plans, etc.). I also taught a graduate-level course, Sustainable City Planning, at Minnesota State University, Mankato at the University’s Twin Cities branch. Married since 1973, Cynthia and I are embraced by our incredibly supportive community of family and friends. We collaborate on each other's involvements, especially writing projects (visit her "Author's Profile" and read about her most recent book, "Shock Wave: A Practical Guide to Living with a loved One's PTSD," http://www.amazon.com/Cynthia-Orange/e/B001HD106C/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1271520099&sr=1-2-ent). This is the most fulfilling period of our lives together, due primarily to having a wonderful loving family with our daughter, Jessica, our son-in-law, Jeff, and, since 2006, Oskar and Quinlan, our identical twin grandsons. The boys are joy personified. Peace
