Introduction Janean L. Watkins began her writing career with Wright Times newspaper in Chicago, IL. Janean has served as Founder and Editor in Chief for Seeds Literary Arts Journal of Northeastern Illinois University, and as News editor for the NEIU Independent. After one semester as News Editor, Janean was promoted to Managing Editor. In May of 2011, after the current Editor in Chief announced his departure, Janean was elected Editor in Chief by unanimous vote of all staff members. One other accomplishment that Janean is quite proud of her first international publication, in May 2010, her essay entitled, "We Are Still A Family: Same Gendered Family", was featured in Ebony Magazine. Janean aspires to maintain her position as a McNair Scholar as she completes her baccalaureate degree in History at NEIU, and plans to continue her education with a masters in Mass Communication, Journalism. Her research interests include, framing of news stories in relation to poverty, women, and urban communities; and disparities in coverage concerning women of color and crime.
