| Introduction | I am not the hero of my own story! I became a Christian when I was 17 years old. I heard a message which said "God has a perfect plan for your life, give him a chance!" I guess that suited my ego-centric view of the universe at the time - but it WAS the start of a journey of grace along the hermeneutical spiral to a better mind. I now consider myself to be an evangelical with a thoughtful soul. For example a few years ago I was at a church Bible study looking at Mark 12v18-44. I was so moved by the way Jesus denounced the hypocrisy of the Sadducees and Pharisees - hypocrises I could identify with. Jesus cuts through the cant of showy religion, and reaffirms love for God and love for one's neighbour. I was so moved that I had to wipe away the tears when I prayed at the end. The example of the poor widow challenges our loveless religion. We are challenged to give his rightful place as Lord. It struck me previously that it is possible to believe in "The Doctrines of Grace" and know them backwards and yet not extend Grace towards other people. Doctrine - rightly understood - is always relational and not mere abstraction. |
