| Introduction | I was born Catherine Furey back in 1969. Fast forward 22 years, I legally replaced Furey with Durkin because an obscure Irish name is tolerable only if it comes from relatives known and loved. Then I converted to Judaism, got married in 1995, and hence the above mouthful. After nuptials, my husband and I ran from Tampa to the open arms of Boston. Life in a northern liberal city agreed with us. We made great friends, carved out successful careers and traveled. What more could we want? How about a baby? We got more than we bargained for several months later when the doctor announced we were having twins. After shock gave way to joy, Husband and I packed our stuff and headed back to Florida so my parents could provide free babysitting for life. As I sat in a suburb surrounded by Weber grills and confederate flags, freelance writing became my opportunity to explore all that is fun and frustrating about progressive parenting and politics. After a short stay in Colorado, we are back in Florida again. Let the games begin. |
