About me

Introduction Raised in a family of nine south of Boston, our playground was the surrounding seashore, swamp and woods. As soon as we kids were old enough to use a shovel, we were digging clams to eat and sea worms for fish bait. We would spend nearly every free minute exploring and foraging on land and sea. Lucky me. Sitka became my home in 1975. After working a few years at both the Sitka Pioneers' Home and the Alaska Native Brotherhood Education Program, I began a lengthy career in the Sitka School District. Many elderly men and women shared their experiences with me about food gathering. They also related many fascinating, hilarious and sometimes terrifying adventure stories. The stage was set for adventures of my own. Yes, very lucky me. Nearly 50 years later, I sum up my life in Sitka, quite simply, as a glorious dream come true. I've had my share of challenges, but have been surrounded by loving family and dear friends in this extraordinary community. Adventures still abound. Having lived so many years in this unspoiled wilderness, it is no wonder that my early infatuation with mother nature has matured into deep, abiding love.
