| Introduction | This course surveys a wide array of literature written by women throughout time and geographical locations, while remaining attentive to the situational contexts which inflect these works. In this way, we will resist coming to any "universal" or "essential" truths about all women and gender more broadly. Instead, this course is designed to show the rich diversity among women authors in their approaches to the themes of our course : exile, alienation, community, articulations of feminism, and the body as object and subject. We will also come to terms with the role of women within the entire print market cycle, as editors, authors, and readers. We will also push the edges of what is literature and fiction by reading pulp and self-help books directed at a mainly female audience. |
