Introduction Rajasekaran Govindasamy started his trade union career in 1963 with the Malaysian Metal Industry Employees' Union. Rajasekaran together with a group of metal workers established the first industrial union known as the Metal Industry Employees' Union. In 1963 union organizing and activities had to be carried out in utmost secrecy. Wages and working conditions for industrial workers were determined in an arbitrary fashion and those who complained were shown the door. Under such conditions employers were all out to eliminate formation of unions at their workplace. Rajasekaran is the Secretary General (1993) of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress, the only national centre of trade unions in the country since 1949. He represents the national centre at various tripatite bodies set up by the Malaysian Government to discuss labour and industrial relations policies, social security and disputes settlement. He is the President of the International Trade Union Confederation, Asia Pacific since February 2005.
