Introduction We've all been subjected to this ubiquitous on-hold message at one time or another. Whether you're on hold with the cable company, dining at a restaurant or trying to return a pair of shoes, customer service is the arm of most organizations that we as consumers must interact with. As a marketer, I think surprising and delighting customers with outstanding service is one of the most effective ways to grow a business. Unfortunately, a lot of what passes for customer service these days amounts to an appalling “go away” attitude that seeks to dismiss the problem (the customer) as quickly as possible. My humble request is simply to be treated like a human by the businesses I patronize.
