Introduction The Middle East..its absence of right angles in architecture and alphabet was curiously inconsistent with the rigid society depicted in the news. Drawn to its beauty but fearful of radical Islam, I let my feet dance on other soils. But in 2006, a tragedy occurred in Beirut. I'd just left my job, and my skills in oil spill response drew me to the area. Friendships and a renewed love affair with the Arab world emerged. Newly certified in permaculture, I've become something of a perma-evangelist, and see now how these tools can help with so many problems in the expanding deserts, war-torn regions, and rural and urban regions of my home continent.
