Introduction "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." -- Yes, Charles Dickens was bipolar. “The creator waits for a flash, a holy conception!” -- Gustav Mahler "You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think." ~ Dorothy Parker, when asked about her thoughts on horticulture.
Interests Music, music, music. The simple things in life. The complicated things in life. Fast food, slow food. Holidays, exercising, romantic gestures, movies that make me sob and blubber, my brother's whackadoodle sense of humor, the ability to specify actual interests when asked, people who don't take themselves too damned seriously, because I do.
Favorite Movies Wonderboys, The Blues Brothers, Notorious, Moonstruck, Crazy Stupid Love, My Left Foot, True Grit, The Elephant Man, Hanoi Hilton, Dan in Real Life, Home movies by my Dad, The Lives of Others, Fletch, Midnight in Paris, Silver Linings Playbook, all Hitchcock, The Holiday, Tommy Boy and its cousin films, Falling Down, Crazy People, Love in the Afternoon, and all the black and white masterpieces
Favorite Music Motown, Classical, Waylon Jennings, Marty Robbins, really old country music in general, and lately a lot of hippie Dylan/Young/Judy Collins, the list goes on; I try to listen to Top 40 to keep up me out of my ruts, but ultimately, I would rather pine away to esoteric folk, like Allison Krauss, Lucy Kaplansky, Dar Williams, Gordon Lightfoot, Brad Hoshaw, oh gosh I can't begin to name them all. I am in love with the voices of Johnny Mathis and Sam Cooke. Stevie Wonder, Dusty Springfield, and Linda Ronstadt are incomparable. My all time favorite, never-could-tire-of-it song is the Johnny M. version of "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?" -- it's the closest thing to heaven that I know in some moments, many moments. And for that matter, Michel Le Grand is a genius. But what do I know of genius?
Favorite Books Maybe Dandelion Wine...for sentimental reasons. Some notables -- The Glass Castle; Alfred Brendel's On Music; Ivan Doig's English Creek; Willa Cather's My Antonia; anything Salinger, especially Nine Stories -- despite some of his cynicism, he is pure and insightful
