Introduction I am a native of Winnipeg, grandson of Irish engineer Patrick Burke-Gaffney, who emigrated to Canada in 1918 to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway Co. My other grandfather was Hubert Sparling, a young farmer who committed suicide when his wife died in childbirth in 1922 and left his daughter (my mother) adrift on the ocean of wheat in southern Manitoba. I left Canada in 1971 on a "Journey to the East" and, after a trip across Eurasia and nine years of training as a Zen monk in Kyoto etc., arrived in Nagasaki in 1982 and started again from scratch.
