Introduction For as long as I can remember I have always enjoyed a love of water, ships and the sea, so it’s no wonder that at the age of seventeen I ran away to sea by joining the Merchant Navy. I rose through the ranks and in 1969 gained my Master Mariner’s Certificate foreign going and was all set for a long career. The time arrived however when I had to come ashore to look after my ailing wife and though I performed this happily I have to admit that I missed the sea. Unfortunately six years ago my wife died which left me too old to return to work yet with a yearning to return to my old life. It was then that I met and fell in love with ‘Futurest’, a fifty seven feet long traditional built narrowboat, with a vintage Lister JP2 engine to power her. Sadly the Lister is no longer aboard and ‘Futurest’ is now thrust along by a 1988 two cylinder Russell Newbery DM2, which performs beautifully as we cruise the UK waterways together.
