| Introduction | I’ve had a very privileged life. People have paid me to think out loud about God. Sometimes I ask the questions and look for answers that are on their minds, sometimes they listen to me and just scratch their heads. I think they trust me because they have heard me talk about the things I have seen that lead me to despair, and sat with them in their despair, and have always believed that we will get through this. Whatever terrible thing “this” is at the moment. I have done this as a professional religious person; accepting the responsibility of leadership in an institution that has a particular knack for demonstrating, on almost a daily basis, how terribly flawed and sometimes wantonly destructive it is. But that institution also can be a community that offers courage and compassion in a world that often seems devoid of both. Not that the church has the corner on compassion any more than it has the corner on truth. It is on a particular corner that you may or may not visit or even notice in your daily life. That corner is where I live and write. It can be a place of community, a place of restoration for those of us who live in a world where everybody hurts. |
