| Introduction | As a young girl, my grandfather, Edmund Von Fumetti, lived at a distance from us in Iowa. He really wasn't comfortable with children but he was passionate about his ancestry. I have many memories of him pulling out a large, rolled-up family box chart full of handwritten names and details that he wanted to talk about and share. I usually thought to myself, "These people are from the other side of the world. And they are dead!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When Grandpa passed in 1988, my father inherited a box full of documents, some of which were up to 200 years old and most of which were in the German language. Together, we spent about a week with those documents and a paperback German-English dictionary trying to understand just what we had and trying to make sense out of the information. Dad asked me if I would be able to find a way to put everything into some type of order. I naively answered, "How hard can that be?" |
