| Introduction | Experimenting as a child with oils, acrylics and temperas, sculpting in sandstone, marble and wood, jamming my air guitar with Led Zeppelin and The Ramones, rejecting the Ritalin often offered to me, these kinds of mildly creative experiences were to give shape to my young life. Besides supplying stimulants, my parents usually offered other sorts of unconventional ways of encouraging their kids to absorb the world’s phenomena by supplying us with nearly unlimited art supplies. Maybe it was the good parenting that mixed with my youthful curiosities that helped fashion my later appreciation of human communication as an art form. My fascination with differences in languages and of the power of a mere word on the psyche and of the awesome presence of the Word in our lives keeps me focused on a search for the most expedient means of coaxing out of students their own unrealized powers of self-expression. |
