| Introduction | I am a thirty-something gal married to M., a dashing thirty-something guy who has somehow convinced me to bear him six children. As newlyweds we embraced the motto "people over things" when we decided to go ahead and have two children while my husband was still in medical school, then two more during his residency. Looking back, I'm not sure exactly when "people over things" turned into "people vs. things," but if I had to take a guess I might pick the point at which our oldest child turned 9 months old and learned to empty the bottom three shelves of every bookcase and tear the covers off all of our favorite books. To a toddler, no thing is sacred. We've put up a good fight, but in the end, we have to agree. |
