| Introduction | John Hawkins has worked in computing for over thirty years. His experience ranges from working as a C programmer on data acquisition and display projects to holding several management positions in academic and community computing at Dartmouth College. In addition to currently sitting on six non-profit and foundation boards, he started ValleyNet (www.valley.net), which was for several years one of the largest non-profit Internet Service Providers in the country. John also served as Chair of a national funder, the Surdna Foundation (www.surdna.org)in New York City. For the past six years, he has been particularly interested in the application of Geographic Information Systems to the non-profit world, using open-source and/or free applications to help foundations map and collaborate around their place-based grant-making. While at Dartmouth, a dual interest in data display and geography led him to write a thesis on “Human-Computer Interface Design and the History of Cartography”. |
