| Introduction | I got into MMA in middle school when I took a semester-long self-defense class from a guy who trained in submission grappling. He taught us to fight and showed us some early UFC videos, and from then on out I was hooked. I trained in taekwondo for a few years as a kid, and I loved the buzz I got from sparring. Later, when I took that self-defense class, I learned that I couldn't box for shit, and I had no idea how to fight on the ground. I took another class from the same guy the next semester, but that was the last one he taught at my school. Thus began a long absence of martial arts from my life. About a year ago, while I was living in Brooklyn and looking for ways to make myself more deadly, I found an MMA gym in Manhattan called Ronin Athletics. The place sucked me in immediately. I started training 5 days a week before I'd even thought about it. The workouts were brutal, and my joints perpetually ached from being arm-barred, clinched, or used as punching targets. Now I live in New Orleans, a great town, except for the lack of MMA gyms. So instead of training, I write about my favorite sport, hoping to some day cover it as a real journalist. |
| Interests | I'd love to write about MMA for a newspaper, magazine, or legit website. That's the goal. |
| Favorite movies | I used to love kung fu movies as a kid: all the Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li flicks, along with the cornball ninja movies like "American Ninja" and the various Van Damme vehicles (especially "Bloodsport", of course.) Now my tastes are a little more refined, but I will always enjoy choreographed fights on sped up film. |
| Favorite music | Right now I'm really getting into the completely unique music of New Orleans. Check some out: http://www.wwoz.org/listen.php |
| Favorite books | Blood Meridian, The Elementary Particles, The Dirt, The Rum Diary, Bright Lights/Big City, South of the Border/West of the Sun, The Monkey Wrench Gang, Days of War/Nights of Love |
