| Introduction | I am a native Greek who left Greece for the United States at ten. I got the chance to see another culture and another, entirely different, educational system. Since 1989, I have been teaching English, mainly focusing on exam preparation, and just recently, this past year, took it upon myself to finally do something I had wanted to for a number of years and that is, teach strictly private lessons. My reasons are quite concrete and many a year in the making; firstly, there's no greater satisfaction for a teacher than that derived from coming to the aid of a student's individual problem, something impossible in a mixed ability classroom not to mention while trying to keep up with material having to be taught. Another reason for my giving up the security of a language school is that teachers there, must adhere to administrative needs and time schedules and therefore, a particular certificate is taught within a particular time frame. Not so in a private lesson. Should the student have either the skills, the knack for the language or the desire for the acquisition, then he/she can be made to, literally, fly ahead of schedule and sit his/her exams earlier than expected. |
