Sponges and tongues are frequently misspelled. Is it because both are thirsty?
I feel that the English Language is already so confusing that misspellings are one of the most common grammatical errors, therefore misspellings of two similar words is not directly linked to the word itself, but rather the fact that English pronunciation dose not give a clear connection to spelling.
