Great article, I first came across the Xerox alto and its unique microcode approach to economising on hardware from the computer architecture module I took as an undergrad at UEA in the late 1980s. It's good to see the actually board and have a bit more detail on how it works.
Re: footnote #3, small correction. The Manchester Mark 1 started development in August 1948 (straight after the development of the SSEM) and ran its first program in April 1949, not 1941.
