In my first microprocessor class in the late 70s, we studied the 8080. The instructions were only defined in octal, there were a lot of 3-bit fields that made sense when you hand assembled instructions. We had a microprocessor trainer we could take home for hardware stuff, while we ran our software in an emulator running on an IBM mainframe submitted on punch cards.
