According to several sources, at first Intel 386 processors were fabricated only by Intel Fab 3 in Livermore, on 4" wafers, using P446 process. There were 54 dies per wafer, and in 1985 a good yield was 3 dies per wafer, gradually rising to 6 in 1986 and to 10 in 1989. Manufacturing of 386 on 6" wafers, begun in 1989(?) in New Mexico using P648 process. Their yields were much higher, and Fab 3 was shut down as a result.
