A really interesting read. I built a micro-board in the form of an Arduino based on the 8086 a number of years ago (http://tech.mattmillman.com/projects/8od/) and yup, bought a tonne of chips off eBay. Only got a few fakes surprisingly, I got some other questionable strangely packaged samples too, which actually worked.
