The EEPROM may be stored in triplicate for error correction, with three bits cleared/set for each 0/1 bit written and, on read, the majority wins (i.e. sum 0/1 reads as 0; sum 1/2 reads as 1). 4096/3 is very close to the advertised EEPROM size.
