If you read the articles carefully, the author said it *could* be risky, not that it *was* risky. Secondly, the people that got all the line spaces to print at one time had to change the programming of the printer. It is not clear if this programming was done at the controller level or the driver level, but it was not "standard" programming. Third, not all chain printers were IBM 1401, there were other makes of printers and perhaps they did not have the interlocks that IBM had.
