I spent the weekend paddling along some Gulf Coast barrier islands with my wife in our new home-made outrigger kayaks and thinking about how paddling is such an essential human experience. I imagine a future where some of us are called back to the sea, not in some Waterworld like cataclysm, but out of a need for space, adventure and freedom that are becoming ever scarcer here on land. From loosely affiliated kampongs engaged in fishing and coastal trade to gypsy flotillas of ever moving houseboats eking out a living in the Everglades like some modern version of the Black Seminoles, the lure of the water is getting strong again. The Human Shore and Beyond the Blue Horizon look like just what I'm looking for in brain fuel- thanks for the heads-up.

I had to re-format a comment, with this great image:

Wessen's comment about the moon is fantastic. I immediately whipped up an illustration of it.

Must track down several here, Geoff, thanks. Gillis must cite Alain Corbin's "The Lure of the Sea." Chuck, check out Corbin too.
