Why don't they align property lines with the fault, the same as if it were a river? And stop building buildings crossing the fault line.

They most likely will not build on top now. Most that sit on the fault are 50-100+ years old. Nothing to do at this point but "ride it out".

Jeff Bianco: In California, we don't align property bounds by things that move, like rivers. I remember one house I toured when I was buying, it had ten acres, about eight of which ended up in or on the other side of a major river.
