I'm going to have to go back and look at it because I didn't notice all the symbolism before -- of them turning their backs to the apple tree. The Immaculate Conception, a solemnity, is the patronal feast of the United States. It is one of the few Holy days of obligation on the Church calendar -- that is, all Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on this day. As this feast occurs early in Advent, it is a perfect time to consider Mary and her important role in the celebration of Christmas.
Mary is the Mother of Our Church- lesson plan for 1st grade on up with: Objectives, Review, Vocabulary Words, Bible Story with questions, Activities, Crafts, Games, Snacks, Puzzles/Mazes/Worksheets
Immaculate Conception coloring sheet by catholicicing.com- Symbolism in this picture includes Mary in the womb of St. Anne (wearing her defining veil). St. Anne and Mary both have their backs turned towards the apple tree to visually state that Mary was conceived without original sin. There are 3 beams of light coming down from the sun that stand for the trinity. Also, the snake (Satan) is unhappy about what has happened here.

You can also play this as a game by dividing the class into teams and give each team the strips of the Hail Mary. See which team can put it in the proper order the fastest.

Hail Mary Roll a Prayer (worksheet)- Cut out prayer strips. Students roll a die to collect all the pieces to their prayer. The first one to collect all the pieces to the prayer is the winner. Students then glue in the spaces provided the prayer in the correct order.
The Hail Mary Worksheet- To find out how well the students know The Hail Mary, have the students fill out the worksheet using the word bank.
[Image] Hail Mary Puzzle #1- All you need is some heavy paper and a copy machine. Copy puzzle and have the children glue it on some heavy paper and color. Then have the children cut on the lines to make a puzzle. Have the children put the puzzle together to practice Hail Mary. Put puzzle pieces in an envelope or ziplock bag.
