Perfect. Beautiful. You complimented him and addressed the situation dead on. The picture of your son sealed the deal.

Excellent job!

The whole refrigerator mother comment shows how absolutely ignorant he is.

I am grateful that you are able to put these words together.
I dont feel hurt by Leary's words at all, I shake my head at his ignorance.
Everytime I see his book in a store I will turn them all backwards.

Ginger!

Excellent and "spot on" -- I hope he gets the message loud and clear.

Best,

I just finished my own post and came over to see if you had written anything yet. I should have known you would be WAY ahead of me! :)
Well said. Thank you.

Ginger,
Thank you so much! We are somewhat new to this journey (my 3 yo twins were dx'd in January) but I have already gained encouragement and perspective from your site on many occasions. Today is a great example---your point that it all goes back to the AAP/CDC is dead on! And your letter to Leary is perfect! I once again leave your site refreshed and ready to get back to work for my boys... God bless you for what you're doing so well!!!

Your post is a perfect answer to this situation. Thank you for your eloquence on this topic.

I hope this new trend of bashing children with autism just to get free publicity goes out of style soon.

Thank you for that. I had not heard about this...spending too much time fighting with my son's school. You said it perfectly. I too blame the ingnorance being spread by the CDC and the AAP.

Wow. Beautifully and powerfully written.

I think Leary's comment just spotlights once again how much conspiracy exists to condemn this generation of children; autism is an EPIDEMIC, not a fad. But there are so many reasons for doctors, government officials, pharmaceutical manufacturers, as well as people who aren't parents of children with autism, to want to deny the truth, that I fear we shall see this epidemic mirror the development of AIDS. Until enough people knew someone suffering the brutal consequences personally, there were lots of jokes and little interest in cooperation for treatment and research.

It's much easier to make fun of it or pretend it isn't happening. When I was in high school learning about the WW2 Holocaust, I could never understand how an entire country or continent could turn a blind eye to what was happening in the concentration camps. Now as a mom of children with a devastating health problem, I have seen it first hand, and I am still puzzled.

Why are we so quick to say, "not my problem, those who do have it are whiners," or, "I haven't experienced it personally, so it must be an exaggeration" ? Leary is one of many that have this attitude. Cowards.

I know not every person can devote their attention to fixing every problem. But again, this is an EPIDEMIC. And even if it wasn't, would comics make jokes about breast cancer? Cerebral palsey? Muscular dystrophy? I doubt it.
