I am pretty sure I would have either frozen in terror or screamed. :O And yes, I know I need to get used to it; but I really am a wuss city girl who needs a little courage. ;)
Lovely blog, those were some big snakes. i caught my breakfast this morning, a few trout, but liked your cats.I will have to look up where you are and send you some wet. I am working in the NE Sandhills and wore a rainsuit most of the morning yesterday.I have been in a tent for two weeks until this last few days so it has been intense with storms.
Back when the oldest daughter was in 5th grad, her class went on a hike sponsored by the park district through the canyons around here. I went along to help monitor the kids...a snake , looking a lot like the one in you pictures, popped his head up out of the long grass and came right at me. he tried to time it so he would past between my feet as i was walking but....his, or my, timing was off, ended up warping him self around my ankle...my long dormant soccer goalie instincts took over and I kicked that guy 10 feet or so back in the direction he came from....just glad it wasn't a rattler....ah fun times :)
I do not like snakes and I have caught them eating my chickens eggs, the whole thing in its jaws, ugh...I must say I grab the hoeand off the head when I see them, that looks like the rat snake here, they are very aggressive here to, one attacked my husband and bit him 3 times on the leg, ugh..we were happy it was not poisonious too.
Okay, so what's this wicked fascination you seem to have with snakes? Isn't this the second or third post on snakes you've had in a matter of a couple of weeks? Are you trying to scare your friend, Pat, away?
Yuk, yuk, and double yuk.
I want pictures of cows, dogs, chickens, cats, flowers, hell, even tractors. Just no more snakes, m'kay?
My sister had a huge black snake living in her chicken house. She tolerated him when he only ate one or two but when he started eating them all!! he had to go. Unfortunately, he had to go permanently because he got caught in the fence trying to run away. Or slither away. :( blessings, marlene

I'm afraid of poisonous snakes, but I do fine with the non-poisonous variety.

Look at the way it undulates to move across the ground. They eat rodents, frogs, birds...and chicken eggs. They are able to unhinge their jaws to accommodate what they are swallowing. Black Snakes are harmless critters unless you are one of the above mentioned creatures. There is a sort of beauty in their shine, not slime, as some people think. They are cold-blooded and therefore they maintain the temperature of their surroundings. The scales have a texture that is amazing to touch.[Image]Marcy redirects this one, away from the hen house. I imagine he was at least five feet long. Beautiful!

We went to a reptile place last year and I held a white pithon around me it is cool yet clamy ! Have a great day !

I don't mind slithering snakes as much as I abhor the two legged kind. That said, I'd squeal like a baby if I came upon the one in your photo.

Ugh! I am having a similar snake post tomorrow. I already wrote it. I don't like running into snakes, but they are just another of Gods creatures!

Oh man, that is weird sight watching them do that with their jaws too! They also make great boots. :)
