Astounding write-up as per usual. Excellent summary of bitcoin mining as well!

Needs to measure performance in consistent units to not make it extra work for the reader.

Would be interested to hear more about the Alto implementation. Did you use any microcode for it? I wrote a microcode compiler for the Alto back when I was at U of R. Maybe you can still find the code for it?

Hi Clint! I considered writing some microcode for the Alto, but didn't get around to it. The microcode is pretty intimidating and confusing; I had to study it to track down some boot problems during restoration. Can you give me more information about your microcode compiler? What was it called?

23 - 17 = 6 = log 1,000,000. Did you mean a million times?

He managed to make mining on the Apollo Guidance Computer running.

For me this is unimaginable, exceeded all my expectations !!!

Sorry for those words, but I never thought I'd see it one day.

Inspired by this and your other posts on Bitcoin, I had a go at Bitcoin mining on a Z80 8-bit microprocessor under CP/M. 5.5 hashes per second! Details here: https://www.tech-cave.co.uk/2022/11/bitcoin-mining-on-z80.html if you are interested.
