Ever since I read the illustrated novel "Watchmen," Harvey Ball's smiley face button has seemed sinister to me. Even before I read that memorable book I think I didn't much care for the vapid face on the button. Smiles are nice - I've learned to smile for ID photos, like passports, driver's licenses, etc., and the results are more attractive than those without a smile - but the button's implied message to "keep smiling, no matter what" I find a sort of micro-aggression. I much prefer MAD's Alfred E. Newman picture with the legend "What, Me Worry?"
