I really really like your site and the stuff you are doing. I used to do some freelance writing for the national papers in Scotland - live in England now - and after 12 years working in law I am getting back into writing for a living. Early days yet but I have a financial website (not mine!) to do some more writing on and am carrying out some marketing/media release work.
Do you think it is possible to make much money from Suite 101? I read in your blog that you have earned a lot of respect from them at least.
I quit my law job and am fully my own man as of now - scary but exciting! - and your site provides some inspiration. Don't stop!
Below is the url for my blog that I started a couple of months ago in case you are at all interested.
Good luck with your work and keep your passion burning.
Russell

Thanks for the kind words! It is possible from Suite101, but it takes time. It took me several months to start getting a check every month, but the checks are getting bigger every month. I think that within another couple of months it will quite worthwhile. People who have been there for over a year apparently have good-sized checks coming in.

You know, I was in Edinburgh years and years ago and I stumbled upon The Scotsman office. I went in and asked if there was a reporter in there I could talk to, as I was finishing up a journalism degree and thought it could be an interesting exchange of ideas.

I was turned down because they were approaching deadline. I had no idea at the time that this was a huge newspaper, and a national one at that. I thought it was just some tiny paper that I had stumbled across. Kind of embarrassing, really...

Edinburgh is my original home town and The Scotsman gave me my very first commissioned article (!).
I'm trying to get my head sufficiently round HTML coding - links within pages and stuff - so I can have more control over my work.
Any ideas? Bet you've written as "how to" about it .... (lol)

I'm not that proficient with HTML so I only use hosts that have some type of page builder to make it easier. Most of those have a simple way to make the links to put the pages together. It's possible to make extremely nice sites using some of these hosts, but I don't because I don't know how. Mine are all plain and simple, but they get the job done.

I've actually gotten compliments from people saying that it's refreshing to see a site that is so straightforward. They were probably trying to be polite, but I don't think that my lack of coding skill has held me back so far.

Thanks for that. I agree that simplicity is best - anything else (including toooooo many links) gets in the way of the message. I had some work where the para headers were also to be bullet points at the top of the page and the idea was that clicking on the bullet point took you to the relevant para on the page. They kindly let me do it in Word and put in the links themselves (though I think it can be done in HTML view on Word). It's all very techie I suppose and like you all i want to do mainly is write. However, the idea of having a little more control ... if ti isn't too difficult ... !
Anyway, I'll let you get on. Thanks for all the responses and maybe speak again. You are on my bookmarks in Firefox 'cos I really think your site is a wee treasure.
All the best.
