I find this an important reminder that, for the vast majority of German citizens, Martin Niemöller's famous quote ("First they came for  the socialists...") would end with "And when they came for me...they said 'You're a proud German who's never said a word against the Reich.  Carry on.'"

It should be common sense to be wary of every authority purporting to "prove" Stalin was worse than Hitler. The notion that urbanization, the spread of literacy and other such trifles can't be considered as carrots depends rather viewing the recipients as insignificant.
