The anthropologist Margaret Mead explained this in her 1970 book Culture and Commitment. She pointed out that in a rapidly changing technological world, knowledge becomes rapidly obsolete. Thus "youth" have an advantage over elders in understanding and utilizing the new technologies since they learn them as they develop their view of the world. Therefore, unlike in the past where society paid a premium for experience, that experience today is obsolete and society pays a premium for "youth" who better understand the implications of new technology.
