I think it is important to understand that the use of popular forces by the elite and non-transparency of intra-elite struggles run deep in Thai history.
This may be connected with the fact that wars in the region were traditionally about seizing people, not land (because until the 20th century, the extreme natural productivity of the region meant that there was more land than people to farm it.
Neither the seizure of Bangkok's airport by the yellows nor the disruption of such a public elite prestige meeting by the reds was possible without collusion (and possibly incitement) from forces not visible in the press nor on Twitter.
Also, Thais themselves, in my personal experience, are aware of this in relating to the events presented to them.
