On the question of sources -- I am a philosopher of social science. I have reflected on questions like these for a long time and have written on them in a variety of academic forums. This entry is not specifically addressing any other scholar's ideas directly, or they would be mentioned. Think of this post -- and many others in the blog -- as my best effort at the moment to think through the question at hand, informed by the research and analysis I've done over a number of years. This particular question about social structure is addressed in my book, New Contributions to the Philosophy of History. The topic of social structure comes up frequently here; you can use keyword "structure" or "CAT_structure" to find other entries. These sometimes take up other authors.

Speaking on the city as structure, you say:

"But the city itself does not function as a REGULATIVE SYSTEM coordinating the activities of large numbers of INDIVIDUALS". (my emphasis)

I define systems as collections of interacting elements; systems are self-regulating in some sense: ecosystem, fridge, airplane flying.

To me, your statement seems to suggest that only systems can be considered as structures. In other words, to be a system is a necessary condition for a structure. Would that be a fair interpretation or is this too wide an interpretation?

This is a wonderful definition to Social Structure. Simple, yet layered in complexity. I will be using it in my classes (credited) to help my students grasp as best they can, the meaning of social structure. Thank you.
