What's wrong with taking pleasure at the hunt so to speak? A woman I worked with once said she's into her own life, which is to say into life. Even if you have a boring job as do I in some ways, people are inherently interesting, and life is inherently interesting, even driving a car or going for a walk can be stimulating.
Entertainment can be an escape and an enhancement of life at the same time

The expression of the artists frustration with the audience that can't appreciate the work but only sees the low brow elements in it. Kurt Cobain wrote this song about just that. Three years later he killed himself.

I think you undervalue such radio/TV programs as "Gunsmoke". I'd suggest it and similar programs were a conduit for some important civic values: tolerance, compassion and justice. Episodes wouldn't be uniformly educative but I think on balance the programs were positive. I also think the "broadcast" aspect was important: the same content was available to all Americans so the effect was to make our culture more uniform. That's in contrast with today's plethora of choices and uneven access to the Internet.

I'm 78 and grew up in a rural area of New York.
