it is absolutely too early to categorize egypt because revolution is a process. as this piece was being posted the working class in egypt embarked on a stike wave and began linking up with the deomstrations. the course of these events will be determined in struggle and depend on the leaderships that arise and vie for influence.

The contagious nature of the Egyptian upheaval seems to put it into the same category as the 1989 East European uprisings, which were also remarkably peaceful. However, the European upheaval had profound implications for capitalism and communism, and it's still unclear what groups will benefit economically from the Egyptian government-to-come.

I'm intrigued by the paucity of guns in general circulation in Eastern Europe and Egypt, compared to the US. If we had anything remotely like the Cairo street demonstrations, I believe that right-wingers would be firing and would kill many people. The NRA is right, that guns affect freedom, but the effect is to delay popular protests and insure that uprising if and when it comes will be much bloodier in the US. It may well come- all the baloney about government policies to create jobs ignores the fact that wages and benefits will continue to fall. I see that the five occupations expected to show the biggest increase in jobs available in this country are food workers & servers, customer service reps, truck drivers, nursing aides & orderlies and security guards. I wouldn't want my children stuck with these jobs...

Clearly, your knowledge of theory outweighs your knowledge of Tunisian or Egyptian society. To evaluate what may constitute significant change in class, property or the ability of the state to exercise power requires that you know the condition of these variables to begin with.
