RIght on target. I would be happy to be part of such a team. This is much of what I do in a pragmatic way to organize social change. There is never time to do the careful academic research to support the work, unfortunately.

I'm curious that you attach such weight to Darnton's Gt Cat Mass analysis. Most of the serious historical work done in its wake - I think of LaCapra's comments, Harold Mah's article, for example - has pointed out its extremely slender, not to say unreliable, source-base, and the great leaps of assertion that characterise its conclusions. It's a good read, but I think that even Darnton himself would not claim that it stands up as a model for how to 'do' ethnographic history.
