Mein kamp ist verboten. It appears to me that supporting an ideology is difficult enough. The British protagonists here, including Hobsbawm, were trying to thread a needle. That needle was non-existent, in the eyes and minds of "true" communists.
You can't always get what you want. Obversely, you don't always want what you get.
